EVANSVILLE – Accelerate Indiana Municipalities (Aim) announced today the city of South Bend has been named a 2017 Municipal Innovation Award winner for its 60,000 and above population category. The City will receive its award during the Aim Annual Awards Luncheon presented by Umbaugh, Wednesday, Oct. 11, at the 2017 Aim Ideas Summit in Evansville.
The City received this honor for its Smart Streets initiative. The program has comprehensively changed South Bend’s downtown traffic patterns, street scapes, parking options and more. The area is seeing new housing and business investments as a result of the multi-year program.
“Citizen expectations are high and municipal leaders are constantly looking for new and innovative ways to meet those expectations. The City of South Bend has taken innovation to a whole new level with their smart streets program. It’s amazing to see how this thoughtful approach is bringing new life to the city’s downtown,” said Aim CEO Matt Greller.
In its 41st year, the Aim Annual Awards program, presented by Umbaugh, recognizes communities and individuals in municipal government for excellence and outstanding achievement. A nine-member panel of qualified judges selected this year’s winners from a competitive field of nominees from around the state.
