FRENCH LICK – Accelerate Indiana Municipalities (Aim) announced Plainfield has earned an Aim Community Placemaking Award for the Prewitt Theatre. The city was honored with this award on Thursday, November 3 during the Annual Awards Luncheon – presented by Baker Tilly Municipal Advisors, LLC during the 2022 Aim Ideas Summit in French Lick. Plainfield won in the greater than 25,001 – 50,000 population category.

Plainfield’s Prewitt Theatre has been serving the community for almost a century. Opened in 1927, the Theatre primarily served as a movie theater for most of its existence but had sat vacant since 2005. Plainfield purchased the Theatre nearly four years ago and entered into discussions with a new local development partner, Keller & Huff. Their plan for the Prewitt was to create a new upscale and unique dining and event space that will include the theatre space, rooftop stage and dining, and multiple bars. This project would now integrate the town’s historical asset and revitalize the community by creating a gathering space for residents and visitors. Moving quickly, the Prewitt Theatre restaurant and event space is anticipated to open Fall 2022.

Indiana’s towns are rich in history and preserving that history takes great effort and intention. Plainfield’s vision to purchase and find just the right fit for the nearly century old space is an example of placemaking. The Prewitt Theatre is a project other communities can review and apply to their own circumstances,” said Aim CEO Matt Greller.

In its 46th year, the Aim Annual Awards program, presented by Baker Tilly Municipal Advisors LLC, recognizes communities and individuals in municipal government for excellence and outstanding achievement. A seven-member panel of qualified judges selected this year’s winners from a competitive field of nominees from around the state.
