Karen Freeman-Wilson has had an eventful two months. In November, the Gary mayor was elected by the membership of the National League of Cities to the position of Second Vice President, a move that puts her in line to serve as President in 2019. Next came the announcement that she would make her national television debut on Undercover Boss, the popular CBS reality series.

On December 21, Freeman-Wilson went undercover alongside a Gary police officer, firefighter, sanitation worker and beach maintenance employee. While the mayor’s performance made for some good comedy, the result was a heightened sense of appreciation for the hard work of the city’s employees and some improvements in equipment and vehicles at their disposal.
