Strategies and Constraints for Handling Municipal Utility Collections

by Erin Jamison Koenig | Aug 20, 2019

Small Communities, CLE

An important function of a utility is to bill and collect revenues in order to pay for the utility’s operating expenses, debt service and replacements and improvements, which many utilities have been doing the same way for years. Collecting from renters can be a challenge and it is even more of a challenge with the passage of HEA 1347. This workshop will teach you by examples from best billing practices from utilities in Indiana and nation-wide and how they use utility deposits and other measures to protect themselves and other rate payers by reducing the amount of unpaid bills. Utilities which properly manage billing and collections will limit shutoffs, debt collection, and the need to pursue payments. The use of best billing practices will not only improve efficiency, limit shutoffs and debt collection, and increase collections but also help your customers feel more satisfied.
