Local and state governments have adopted social medias as an inexpensive means to inform, explain, and respond to their constituents. Recently, there have been numerous examples in the local media demonstrating that governments and elected officials are not immune from unintentionally defaming someone. This workshop will explain the civil cause of action known as defamation and potential costs of committing it and provide guidance on how to avoid it in social media and traditional media. Lastly, it will provide some insight into current events involving local units of government who are mired in lawsuits due to making erroneous or false statements about others.
